Rwanda: Sexual Pleasure and Controversy – BBC World Service

When it comes to gender equality in politics, Rwanda regularly tops international league tables. But for some in this tiny African country, gender equality is not just a public matter but a private one too. The traditional sexual practice of Kunyaza has a reputation for facilitating female orgasms and ejaculation.

We follow Vestine Dusabe, a well-known radio host and sexologist living in Rwanda whose late night show advises people on how to practice kunyaza and to improve sexual life for both men and women.

While exploring the intimate world of female pleasure, we also hear about another traditional practice, which is often spoken about alongside kunyaza: gukuna, otherwise known as labia elongation. Vestine, like many others, have encouraged girls as young as nine to elongate their labia in order to prepare them for marriage and enhance their own and their future husband’s sexual pleasure. But now the practice is receiving a backlash. Some Rwandan feminists and medical professionals argue that gukuna should be seen as a detrimental health issue, not a cultural one.

There’s advice and limited support for women concerned about labia elongation provided in Rwanda by medics and NGOs, such as Health Development Initiative.

WHO does not explicitly mention labial elongation as a form of female genital mutilation. It periodically reviews the typology and classification of certain practices and the next review is envisioned for 2020-2021.

In this documentary, we look at competing attitudes when it comes to female sexual pleasure and explore the collision zone between individual rights and preserving cultural practices.

  1. Interesting indeed…what did I stumble upon? BTW, it's practised, not "practiced". And gukuna doesn't have an "impact" on (crash into) young girls; it has an effect on them.

  4. LETS GET IT RIGHT WITH OUR MAKER BEFORE WE MEET THE  UNDERTAKER!

With the passion and vigour I am seeing people pursue their goals and ambitions for this temporary life, I wish they would have the same passion for their spirituality …that is salvation through JESUS CHRIST…. While you have your  beings seek the Most High God because there's no repentance in the grave or after death….hell and heaven are real places that departed souls will go!….heaven is a paradise while hell is a place of ETERNAL torments and regrets! What shall it profit any person to gain the world and loose his/her soul!
    Ecclesiastes 12:1-2
    [1]Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
[2]While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

Run to the Jesus Christ the Saviour now, while you have your being because there is no repentance after death!

  5. Well well , infact what I heard years ago about pulling the pullings😄 was because most men use to go out of town for work or rather for a work mission even for three to six months
Now in that long period of time the elders came up with an idea on how these women will be living for so long without their husbands.
That's how the pulling was being introduced to reduce the sexual feeling in women so that by pulling all the time that place will lose its sensitivity..
And the woman can't even feel tempted to do things like cheating she'll wait until the husband gets back from his mission ..
And later when they did a survey they found that those who use to pull the …
Lost sensitivity compared to those who never practiced the pulling at all … All I can say is that it's not a big deal and it's not every man who would want to see his woman with extra ordinary something down there.
But I think the best is not to pull.
    Thank you

  6. What a load of ish. About fake hair. Fake nails. Straightening hair? Bleaching skin? And saying traditions. I think if Africa had not been helped by Christian's. U would hve wiped yrselves out. With all the bs that goes on. Including the facts. That Africans sold out Africans first. And were the first slave traders?

  7. Who told you that your culture is bad? Whites not so? What is harmful between transgender and Libia longetion? Transgender right? Why these very same whites who are condemning our good culture don't condemn their evil culture instead forcing other to practice the same and legalize them? I prefer African understand themselves and preserve their culture without washed away by western interference. Africans we think right because before whites were we and what we have based on our long experience of our bodies.

  8. What if a woman isn’t born with large or protruding labia “lips”?

It’s very important for women to really love your body just the way it is.

  9. I have watched other videos of African Cultures being very open about female sexual pleasures and it's fascinating to know that women dominate in bed in Africa 😜… it feels like in South Asia(India) this has been prevalent for ages though sporadically

  10. What a stupid subject for a story, sex. You should do that and not talk about it. Then this woman would be much happier and wouldn't preach on the internet. (like me hehehe…….hmmmmm)

  12. THE LABIA IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE BIG !

A BIG LABIA LOOKS BAD AND IT TASTES BAD ! A BIG LABIA IS CALLED "ROAST BEEF" IN AMERICA ! THAT IS NOT A GOOD THING !

IN AMERICA, A BIG LABIA WILL GET A GIRL DUMPED BY THE MAN !

  13. Rwanda is not a peaceful country (unless you are a white tourist). The spy network is everywhere. The government kills its opponents – even those who live abroad. Rwandans live in fear of their neighbours. That is reality.
