IZMIR, TURKEY (2022) | 6 Things you MUST do in & around Izmir

Izmir Turkey offers a mix of cultural, historical and archeological sites. Thus, Izmir is a great place to visit if you want to immerse yourself in Turkish culture and enjoy the unique local cuisine. In this video, we break down the best things to do in and around Izmir, Turkey.

Best Things to Do in Izmir, Turkey:

6. Explore Konak Square
Konak is Izmir’s core historic area, located right next to the water. It’s known for its busy square full of pigeons. But you can also find Izmir’s iconic landmark here, the Clock Tower.

5. Discover Ancient Izmir “Smyrna”
Just like so many other cities in Turkey, modern-day Izmir has an ancient past. Known as Smyrna in the past, it was founded by the Greeks, taken over by the Romans and rebuilt by Alexander the Great before becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century.

4. Shop & Eat in Alsancak
The bustling neighbourhood of Alsancak is located in the heart of the city. It’s the center of culture and entertainment, thus the ideal place to indulge yourself in the local Turkish culture.

3. Day or Multi-Day Trip to Pamukkale
The 3rd best thing to do in and around Izmir is to go on a one day or multi-day trip to Pamukkale. This magical destination is located about 230 kilometers or 143 miles from Izmir. It can easily be reached within a day or two by bus, tour bus, train, or rental car. The limestone pools are of course a unique and beautiful sight for pictures, but there’s so much more than that at Pamukkale. In fact there’s an entire ancient city behind the Thermal Pools of Pamukkale.

2. Visit the Kemeralti Bazaar
The second best thing to do in Izmir is to visit the local Kemeralti Bazaar. This is one of the liveliest and oldest parts of the city and lies right besides Konak Square.

1. Day Trip to Ephesus
The best thing to do in Izmir is to go on a day-trip to Ephesus. Ephesus is our favorite ancient ruin in all of Turkey. The ruins are located about 80kms or 50miles from Izmir, near the city of Selçuk. You can easily get there by train, bus, or car and combine it with a visit to the House of Virgin Mary, a sacred place. Ephesus was an ancient port city and once considered the most important Greek city and the most important trading center in the Mediterranean region.

  1. I lived in Izmir for 4 years as a U.S. Soldier working for NATO. The video has a heavy Islamic flavor which can be off-putting to many Americans but Izmir is the California of Turkey. Located on the west coast, you can get a beer just about anywhere. To be sure, most Turks are Muslim but there is a big Christian church in Izmir and the locals do not look down on you if you are not Muslim. Also, koo-SHOD'-uh-see (Kushadesi) and CHESH'-may (Cesme) are the correct pronunciations. "c" / "s" with a hook at the bottom = ch / sh; and a regular "c" is pronounced "j": Incirlik is IN'-jur-lik.

  2. 1st time watching one of your vids and I liked/sub'd before the intro finished. You guys are living! Showing me places I missed too! (I lived in Karsiyaka & Hatay for 4yrs.. great people/food/city).
A couple of things though. In Turkish, the C's sound like J's, and the funny S's sound like Shh (Alsan"Jack" and Che"Sh"Meh). Excellent vid!!!

  3. Hello, it was a nice video to watch, very informative. After watching this, I will make sure Izmir will be part of my Turkey visit next year.🛫

  4. Really appreciate how you actually show the locations on the map and provide travel times- idk why more travel vloggers don’t put the time/effort to do so.

  5. Turkey is in the hands of the ancient peoples of the region.

90% of the people living in Turkey are not Turks, they are ancient inhabitants of the area Greeks Byzantine Jews Arabs Kurds Armenians etc., who became Turks.

It seems so from the DNA tests.

Look at your own face, does it look like from Deep Asia?

  6. Great Video! Do you think it is worth it to go on these day tours or to do it yourself? Is it worth is to rent a car to go to Pamukkale and Ephesus or go some other way? Thanks!

  7. I lived in Izmir, Turkey from October 1953-1955 because my Father was in the US Navy so our Family flew to Izmir to live. The weather is very similar to San Diego where we lived at the time. We returned to the USA via US Navy ship in 1955. While living in Izmir at that time we visited Ephesus, and lived near the Mosque in the Alsancak area. I loved Izmir. I am now 76. We saw Pompeii on the way back to the USA. I was 9 years old by the time we returned to the USA. I enjoyed your video very much. Thank you.

  8. I go to turkey izmir my dad was born there and it’s hot really hot and I live there 🇹🇷 and we’re also Islam ☪️ because Turkish people are islam
